Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa and katao you all
I summon you all here on this beautiful early Friday morning, for this is a Friday of great significance and reflection.
Its a nice sunny morning in Auckland with temperature highs of 15 and a low of 8 degrees later down the line.
This week marks a special week for us all, for it is us three who marked onto a journey 5 years ago, it is us three who started a journey that would change the course of our lives. Fopr Thank god its friday for that journey.
Five years ago, we all began a new chapter of our lives, embarking on the beautiful journey of engineering. A degree held in such high regard, yet one that often has so little to show for the countless hours, sleepless nights, and sacrifices behind it.
It was five years ago that we sat around those tables with mojitos in hand, staring across at the slightly tanned, busty bartender working at the AUT campus bar. It was five years ago that we watched the basketball games unfold, seeing those slightly older students who, at the time, felt like they belonged to an entirely different generation.
Back then, graduation felt like a lifetime away. Now, somehow, we’re the ones standing at the finish line.
Today marks the first friday in which Tommi, our e hoa, el hombre, the one we must not forget, for lest we forget. Has offfically recieved his graudation certificate
For it is now us who have become the people that once seemed a generation ahead. Yet somehow, it feels like only yesterday that we were sitting around that table, debating which kebab to order. Me hiding Blake’s mandarin, Tommi hiding my vape that used to hang around my neck, and wasting entire afternoons thinking we had all the time in the world.
Five years have passed in what feels like five minutes. The students we once looked up to are long gone, and now we’ve quietly taken their place. The chapter that once seemed so distant has finally come to an end.
For this is a Friday we don’t just look back at our hard week, we look back at the five years of sacarifce and hard work, for although we did not all finish together, some at different years, some at different campuses, we all finished at some point, and the histroy books wont remeber the small details but rather the certifcate at the end.
Now, we must be honest with ourselves in times of reflection.
Could we have worked harder? Perhaps. Perhaps we would be in different places today. Perhaps there were nights when we could have studied a little longer, skipped going out, or pushed ourselves just that bit further.
But where does that leave us?
We will never know.
years from now, we won’t rememeber every late night spent studying, every assignment submitted at 11:58 p.m., or every stressful exam. we will remember the destination. But that destination is only reached because of the countless small moments that came before it.
That is the lesson.
Every night, before you lay your head down, ask yourself one simple question:
“Could I have worked any harder today?”
for it is Ghandi that once said that before going out on a 6 week bender.
For thank GOD is Friday, for its Fridays like these which are milestones in our lives.
Last week I set out a task, in which I wanted you all to make a signficant change in your lives. I am intrigued to hear that, please reply back with what changes you have made.
